Officials invite campus community to take a walk

by JENNIFER EARLY

Faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in the Walk in the Dark tour to explore areas in need of additional lighting and extra security at 8:30 p.m. today.

The fourth annual Walk in the Dark tour will begin in front of the University Center. Participants are asked to bring comfortable shoes and a list of questions for tour leaders.

Student Government Association members, UH Department of Public Safety officers and Plant Operations team members are scheduled to appear at the event.

UHPD Capt. Brad Wigtil said the walk will take about an hour to complete and be broken down into four geographic sections that UH police cover on a daily basis.

"(UHDPS) encourages everyone to come out. (Walk in the Dark) is a good time. It's an opportunity to interact with Plant Operations. It also allows students to voice concerns," Wigtil said.

Wigtil said the walks also allowed UH to develop a campus lighting plan that resulted in less expensive energy bills.

"Also, numbers were recently put on all the light posts around campus. If a light is out, it makes it easier to identify," Wigtil said.

Shuttle buses will be available to pick up participants and return them to the UC after the campus tour.

Walk in the Dark is sponsored by the SGA, UHDPS and Plant Operations.

To voice concerns or ask questions about campus safety, contact the UHDPS online at www.uh.edu/police/feedback.html.
