Report card down on youth, up on Mr. 3000

Young voters: F
Sure, talking heads are going on and on about how voters between the ages of 18 and 30 may have turned the tide in the election Tuesday, and sure, that age group came out stronger than it has in 24 years.

But that's only 24 percent of the people in that age range living in the United States.

You'd be hard pressed to convince even the most lenient teaching assistant that 24 percent deserves a passing grade.

B-G-O: A
Even Houstonians who don't follow baseball should be happy to hear that perennial Astro Craig Biggio is likely headed back for a 20th season with Houston's boys of summer.

The team is expected to hold a press conference today to announce the signing of a one-year deal worth slightly more than $5 million.

Biggio is 70 hits away from reaching the illustrious 3,000 career hits mark; he would be the first Astro and the 27th player in Major League Baseball history to reach the benchmark.

Making sense on immigration: Inc.
Democratic gains in Congress signal that the fight is not over for a comprehensive solution to illegal immigration between Mexico and the United States, and the meeting Thursday between President Bush and Mexican President-elect Felipe Calderon is a sign that the White House may be willing to back down from the exquisitely stupid idea of a border fence.

But we've seen this before.

When Bush first stepped into office in 2000, the future of U.S.-Mexican relations looked bright -- after all, Bush was fresh from his tour of duty at the governor's mansion in Austin, and he and Mexican President Vicente Fox looked like old school chums as they shared many a ranching photo op.

Then came 9/11, with a compelling reason for the Bush administration to change the direction of its foreign policy, but more than five years later the federal government has spent little time or effort in the Western Hemisphere.

So excuse us for being a little wary when Washington seems to show some interest in the region.
