News Attorney speaks to students Esteemed lawyer will discuss experience and advise on legal world by CHELSEA ADAMS
The African-American Honors Student Association is hosting a speech by a senior partner of an international law firm 4 p.m. today on the second floor of the Honors College in the M.D. Anderson Library. Rufus Cormier, an attorney with Baker Botts, LLP, will share insight into the changes in corporate America, strategies for success and the joys of philanthropic work. Cormier is also well known for his openhanded support of civic and humanitarian causes. He has received awards from various private and non-profit organizations, including the National Conference for Community and Justice’s Humanitarian Award and the Anti-Defamation League’s Karen H. Susman Jurisprudence Award for his commitment to equality, fairness and justice. Cormier was one of the first blacks to work at a major Houston law firm when he joined Baker Botts, LLP in 1974 as an associate. He was promoted to partner seven years later. Cormier stuied law at Yale University and served as a special assistant to counsel for the House Judiciary Committee during President Nixon’s impeachment inquiry. He was recognized by Texas Monthly and Law & Politics as a "Texas Super Lawyer" since 2003. The speech is open to all students, but those considering law school are encouraged.
