Sports UH loses key player before Tech game by CELENA FLORES
Houston junior guard Tye Jackson will not have the chance to lead the women's basketball team on the court in its season opener against Texas Tech tonight. The Conference USA First Team guard suffered a partial tear to her left meniscus in the team's 83-78 exhibition win against the Houston Jaguars. Doctors said Jackson could be out anywhere from four weeks to three months. If out for three months, Jackson could red-shirt for the season. "The good news from the doctor is that I just tore my meniscus, a partial tear … they won't know what else could be wrong until Thursday when I go in to have it scoped," Jackson said. "I don't want to redshirt; I would like to just be out for a month so I can come back (to play)." Until Jackson does come back, the Cougars will have to look at other players to step up their game and compete during Houston's pre-conference schedule. Jackson said she has no doubt that UH can run with teams like Texas Tech and Duke, the Cougars' first two games of the season. "I honestly think that they are going to do a good job. I think our team is really strong, and the difference between last year's team and this year is that we have a lot more people," Jackson said. "The players from last year are more mature." Even if Jackson does red-shirt the rest of the season, she still maintains a confidence in the Cougars' chances. "I think we are a really good team, and a lot of
people don't know that yet because they don't (know) the kind of players
we have on our team …with or without me, the team will do great regardless,"
Jackson said.
