Texas Tech comes to UH for season opener

by ARIE GRAHAM
The Daily Cougar

The UH women's basketball team will face off against Texas Tech 7 p.m. tonight at Hofheinz Pavilion. These teams have not played each other since 1996 back in their Southwest Conference days.

The Cougars finished up their exhibition play Friday night with an overtime win over the Houston Jaguars 83-78. Junior guard Tye Jackson suffered a meniscus tear after 14 minutes of play in the first half.

Head coach Joe Curl said the injury may not have Jackson out for the entire season.

"It was good news to me when I found out that it may only be a one- to three-month deal and not the whole year." Curl said.

Jackson will have her knee scoped on Thursday to determine the seriousness of the injury and how long she will have to stay out.

Curl said the injury gave him mixed feels going into tonight's game.

"We are injured and beat up, so our numbers are down a little bit, but I feel positive, and we are going to fight through this," Curl said.

Texas Tech is 1-0 on the year after beating Texas-San Antonio 66-58 on Friday in its season opener. The Red Raiders have won the last 15 games against the Cougars and hold a 32-13 series advantage. Curl remains optimistic, however.

"The quality of the players that we have left is great," Curl said. "We are going to play our guts out. I am very excited about it."

The Cougars will play their first road game against Associated Press No. 6 Duke at 1 p.m. Saturday.
