Eclectic avant-garde highlights weekend

Boston-based soprano saxophonist Bhob Rainey and electro-acoustic guitarist Annette Krebs from Berlin are pairing up for one night to fuse musical talents in what should be an evening of sophisticated improvisation. 

As a classically trained performer, Krebs combines composition and improvisation to form pieces in which the presence of silence is just as essential as the notes emanating from her guitar. 

Rather than play memorized riffs that sound pretty cool like most traditional guitarists, Krebs lays her guitar flat on a table to execute careful music-making while deriving various vibrant sounds and juxtaposing dynamics from the amplified instrument. 

These techniques should prove to fit perfectly with that of expressive saxophonist Rainey as he too values a calming musical atmosphere. 

Rainey, an experimental independent musician and co-founder of the duo Nmperign, brings forth the ability to focus on the more subtle sounds of the saxophone while maintaining a balanced ability to carry out powerful and wide-ranging energy.

Witness the international musical creativity as Nameless Sound, formerly Deep Listening Institute Houston, presents Krebs and Rainey in its last concert of the year at 8 p.m. tonight at the Live Oak Friends Meeting House, 1318 West 26th St. 

The concert is free of charge, but donations are more than welcome.

For another avant-garde performance with a higher decibel level and edgier guitar riffs, catch Satin Hooks, an energetic indie rock group of Houston-based musicians.

If you want to be bombarded with a classical music-influenced, highly powerful rock set held together with a dominant string section, check out The East Village Opera Company. 

The group, consisting of a five-member band, a string quartet and two vocalists, will perform at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Warehouse Live Ballroom, 813 St. Emmanuel St.
