HGO asks for student help

Volunteers distribute information to raise awareness of opera

Houston Grand Opera is recruiting students who are interested in helping the city's art culture find new life by volunteering for the HGOperatives program.

"It is a great opportunity to get involved in the arts. You don't have to be a music student, just a music lover," Kori Gould, HGO promotions coordinator, said.

HGOperatives is a street team that goes out to local coffee shops, churches and other community centers to hand out flyers and brochures for HGO's operas.

The volunteer group started in October and is still in its early stages with fewer than 20 volunteers -- mostly Rice University students -- who can take advantage of several perks.

"As a volunteer, they get to experience things normal ticket buyers don't," Gould said.

In exchange for their efforts, students will receive backstage tours and free tickets to the opera as well as free gas and breakfast.

Volunteers can also help break down the stereotype of opera being only for stuffy older people, Gould said.

HGOperatives can help raise attendance in the opera and other arts that go overlooked by younger people, music education junior Sixto Montesinos said.

"This program has the potential to keep everybody more in touch with all the arts the city has to offer. It could bring in younger audiences and raise appreciation and awareness for classical music," he said.

Gould said students do not necessarily have to like opera to be on the street team, and uses herself as an example.

"I was a 24-year-old grad student who didn't know anything about opera, but once I started working here, I fell in love," Gould said.
