News Course to study women by KHYATI PATEL
This is the third in a five-part series of articles in which Daily Cougar staff writers provide a look into an interesting, non-core class being offered in Spring 2007. The Spring semester course Women in Politics, POLS 3390, will give students the chance to learn about the impact of women have had on our nation's policies. Professor Nancy Sims said students in her class will focus on the role of women in society prior to gaining the right to vote. "Questions such as ‘do women govern differently, campaign differently, adjudicate differently' are all explored," Sims said. As one of the first women to break into Texas politics, Sims said she feels her knowledge of the field will help the class. Sim said she used her experience gained from 25 years in the political arena and several years in the business sector to design her course. Lectures that discuss some of the more recent historical events are woven in with her personal experience. Students from all majors are welcome to take part in this class. They will gain knowledge of women in politics and the workplace, with a focus on current events, which Sims said will influence the direction of the course. "While we will evaluate the path women have traveled and discuss many great women from our past, we will also discuss current topics throughout the course," Sims said. "Every single day women remain in the news in our world. It may be the struggle for women in Afghanistan or an employment discrimination case in Idaho. If it is topical, we will discuss it in our class." Send comments to dcnews@mail.uh.edu |
