Put off studying with live music

by RUTHIE RODRIGUEZ
The Daily Cougar

This weekend most students will spend long hours studying for finals and finishing up term papers. Some will feel the need to procrastinate by watching television, going night-night or doing whatever it is college students do these days to avoid responsibility.

A better way to put off work this weekend is to hit up some local venues and witness some of the live music acts coming to town.

Enjoy an evening of easy listening at Cool Jazz Christmas. Singer/songwriter Michael Franks, smooth jazz guitarist Jonathan Butler, contemporary jazz pianist David Benoit and tenor saxophonist Kirk Whalum will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at Verizon Wireless Theater. Tickets range from $39 to $49.

Watch Baton-Rouge based ska band 6 Pack Deep, death metal thrash-rock group Cast In Grey, Canadian rock quartet Fall of Adam, Sienna Blu and a host of other alternative rock acts as they compete in a battle of the bands at 8 p.m. tonight at Verizon Wireless Theater's Club V, 520 Texas Ave. Tickets are $15 the day of the performance and $10 if purchased in advance.

Unmerciful, Necrophagist and Dying Fetus will open for Cannibal Corpse at 8 p.m. Saturday at Java Jazz Coffeehouse, 2505 FM 1960. Don't let the distasteful names turn you off of these bands, if scary grindcore is your thing. For more information and ticket prices, call (832) 202-2287.

Plastilina Mosh, a rock duo from Monterrey, Mexico, will perform with The Mexican Institute of Sound on its Zune Tour on Sunday night at Meridian, 1503 Chartres St. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 the day of the show. Call (713) 225-1717 for more information.

The Applicators, a female pop-punk quintet from Texas, will open for seminal punk band Circle Jerks at 8 p.m. Sunday at Warehouse Live Ballroom, 813 St. Emmanuel St. For more information, call (713) 225-5483.

Indie rock junkies are probably already planning on checking out Death Cab For Cutie at 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts' Sarofim Hall. Tickets are $28, so stretch your buck and don't miss opening act OK Go.
