Stars from 2006 will dazzle at the Grammys

Music Notes

Eli Jabbe

As the music world prepares for a new year and a new cycle of albums and events, it’s time to celebrate the big moments of 2006.

The Grammy Awards will take place Feb. 11 in Los Angeles. A few of the performers for the yearly musical extravaganza have been announced, including two powerhouse acts from 2006: The Red Hot Chili Peppers, who will be right at home at the Grammy Awards because they are L.A. natives, and Gnarls Barkley.

Of course, the Peppers are headed by Anthony Kiedis and include reknowned bassist Flea, who has been responsible for countless memorable bass lines on many of the Peppers’ songs from their extensive discography. Gnarls Barkley made a strong impact in 2006 that unfortunately was unseen by some.

One of the members of the group is DJ Dangermouse (a name that obviously borrows from Danger Mouse, a favorite cartoon of mine as a child), a Los Angeles-based DJ who has been known to make mash-ups. His 2004 mash-up of vocals from Jay-Z’s then-last album, The Black Album, with vocals and instruments of Beatles songs was what first made him famous. Cee-Lo Green is the other member of Gnarls Barkley and is a veteran musician who was present when fellow Atlanta musicians Outkast first rose to fame.

Featured on their first album, the multi-faceted personality has since made his presence known in the music world within his own niche. Cee-Lo’s soulful crooning mixed with Dangermouse’s unique sounds – as epitomized on the huge hit "Crazy"– was the perfect combination for one of 2006’s standout albums: St. Elsewhere.

In addition to those two stand-out groups, Houston native Beyonce will also be performing at the Grammys. The artist has risen to new heights lately thanks to her single "Irreplaceable," which has been at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for six weeks in a row. The single is also receiving the most airplay, sitting at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay Charts as well. While Beyonce has had great success before in a group and as a solo artist, she hasn’t quite had the huge buzz that "Irreplaceable" has created.
