Opinion

Newest editor takes place at helm

by Robyn Morrow
Editor in chief

Last semester, a student came to the newsroom asking for the Opinion editor. A coworker pointed to me, and the student laughed.

Figures it would be a woman, he said, thinking I hadn’t heard. I laughed.

No, sir, I thought, it figures it would be me.

Even as a copy editor for The Daily Cougar, I used to stay late nights working on the publication in which I take much pride. Although I am nervous to have the responsibility of being editor in chief, I’m excited to be able to help continue to improve the quality of The Daily Cougar and build on the improvements past editors have made.

I can’t do it alone, though.

This semester brings a new staff that is ready to give readers the latest information on what’s happening at the University. The new staff includes an eclectic group of students who can’t wait to get started on delivering what you, the readers, want.

These dedicated students keep their ears to the ground and are always prepared to follow a story. We all work together to make sure that each day’s paper is informative and something readers will enjoy.

This semester, I hope readers will feel more connected through our publication. We plan to increase the numbers of student, professor and organization profiles with the help of our newest addition to the staff, our features editor.

You may also notice the new look and feel of The Daily Cougar. This clean, simple design leaves us more room for content, including more space for opinion columns. Feel free to give us your opinion on anything from the war on terror to the rising costs of a college education.

For those sports fanatics, our Sports editors are happy to bring you interviews with players and coaches of every UH sport. Be sure to check out today’s special section dedicated to the Cougar football team, whose talent and perseverance helped them defeat Southern Miss and earn a Conference USA championship and a trip to the Liberty Bowl.

For those who don’t know me, I encourage you to stop by the newsroom, Room 151, Communication Building, for a visit.

I enjoy getting to know readers, and I’m always open to hear anything – positive or negative – you have to say about our publication. My number is (713) 743-5362, and you can reach me via e-mail at dcougar@mail.uh.edu.

We can’t continue to improve without the support of the UH community.
