Bitter about the cold?

At least parking was easyUH did not close because of the cold weather and possibility of ice on roads, but many Houston-area school districts and other higher learning institutions decided the near-freezing temperatures and threat of rain were reasons enough to close down for a day.

So, in essence, some students took part in a snow day that lacked a key ingredient – the snow.

Despite the pleas, wishes and prayers of teenagers and young adults, there was for the most part a lack of frozen water, which meant there was no ice skating, for those individuals in Houston who own ice skates. Compiling flakes to form a snowball was out of the question, and most importantly, there were no frozen streets or bridges to cause those nasty pile-ups for people who are in too much of a hurry to drive with caution when road conditions become hazardous.

Thanks to those drivers who strongly believe the speed limit is the minimum speed for all occasions – which happens to be most drivers in Houston – most of the city was shut down for a day.

This made the commute less congested and more enjoyable for those whose bosses seemed to care less about their wellbeing. In fact, were it not for the thermometer reading 35 degrees, the ride from Point A to Point B this morning in Houston was probably the most comfortable, least stressful commute some people have experienced in years.

That was good news for UH students, who were expected to show up to class Tuesday. Those souls who dared to brave the low temperatures and 10 to 15 mph wind on the walk from the house to the car found it pleasantly easy to find a parking space today, even around peak parking time.

This exquisite surprise almost made up for the loss of feeling in the outer extremities of the body experienced while walking on campus.
