Life & Arts Dark children's tale inspires composition by RUTHIE RODRIGUEZ
If you like listening to music inspired by a series of children's unfortunate deaths, you might have some sort of sick problem. Nevertheless, consider an event that may strike your fancy. The Gashlycrumb Tinies is original orchestral music written by Houston's own John Duboise and inspired by Edward Gorey's book of the same name. Gorey's infamous book is a gruesome take on a children's alphabet book filled with his drawings and short verses, usually rhyming, which correspond to the deaths of 26 children whose names each start with a letter from the alphabet. "A is for Amy who fell down the stairs; B is for Basil assaulted by bears; C is for Clara who wasted away; D is for Desmond thrown out of a sleigh … " Duboise's work will be performed by Two Star Symphony Orchestra, which is made up of a handful of talented musicians who will deliver the piece's sinister undertones with heavy strings to match Gorey's gruesome tale. The orchestra will include bassist Chris Bakos, percussionist Kirk Suddreath and violinist Jerry Ochoa, to name a few. The show will be performed at 8 p.m. tonight and at 8 p.m. Sunday and Friday at Diverse Works, 1117 East Freeway. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for Diverse
Works members and $6 for students and seniors. For more information, contact
the box office at (713) 335-3445 or visit www.diverseworks.org.
