Metro revises bus routes near UH

Spokeswoman: Several lines on streets around campus have been adjusted to increase efficiency

Students, faculty and staff relying on Metro buses for transportation to and from campus will experience a makeover in their daily routes effective Sunday.

The changes are a result of possible street closures and a desire to streamline the existing routes, Raecquel Roberts, director of Metro's media relations, said.

"It's been in the works for a while," she said.

The changes which affect routes 29, 30, 42, 68, 77 and 80 will remove all Metro lines that run along Cullen Boulevard between Wheeler and Holman avenues.

Some bus riders worry about how this will impact their day-to-day schedules.

The alteration in Route 30 leaves University Studies freshman Christina Loville skeptical.

"Every day, I would have to walk from Wheeler," Loville said.

Sally Zunker, office coordinator for Business Services, requires specialized Metrolift buses coming down Cullen Boulevard near her McElhinney Hall office. "I just hope it won't affect my Metrolift," she said.

Metrolift is a program that provides transportation for those with disabilities or other afflictions that prevent them from riding a standard line.

"Now (the buses) will be coming down Holman," Zunker said.

Hotel and restaurant management junior Yusuf Ravat has mixed feelings about the changes.

"I need to get to Wheeler to get to (the University Hilton). (The revised Route 80) is actually an advantage to me," Ravat said.

Ravat, however, currently rides Route 77 for quick access to the A.D. Bruce Religion Center. The changes will require him to revise his plans, since the route will no longer service Wheeler Avenue.

Despite this, Ravat said he will manage.

"I can pray any time," he said.

Those affected by the rerouting will still have the campus shuttle service available.

"It doesn't affect us at all," Paul Lozano, manager of UH Parking Enforcement, said.

Information on changed routes is available at www.ridemetro.org or by calling (713) 635-4000.
