Cougars take top spots in tourney

COUGAR SPORTS SERVICES

The UH track and field team displayed another solid performance for the second consecutive week, this time winning first and third place in front of their home crowd Saturday at the Leonard Hilton Memorial.

UH's men's squad won the team competition with junior Ivan Diggs setting the tone for the team by establishing an NCAA provisional mark in the high jump, clearing 2.16m (7-01.00). 

Houston also took the men's relay, claiming victory in the distance medley relay and the 4x400. 

The squad beat out the competition in the men's distance medley with a time of 10:24.49 and 3:16:41 in the 4x400.

The women's team, who finished third, was led by junior Amanda Villanueva who won the weight throw for the second week in a row. The Cameron, Texas native tossed 17.50m (57-5) for the top spot. Freshman Ashley Bryant added an eighth place finish for the Cougars.

Another NCAA provisional mark was set for the Cougars as junior Seun Adigun won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.43. Sophomore Lee'Andrea Robinson chipped in with a third-place time of 8.60 and senior Rachel Easley finished 10th.

Other notable performances were by senior Calum Neff, who won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.52, and was followed close by senior Chris White in third.

In the pole vault freshman Alex Bentley placed second, clearing 4.75m (15-07.00). 

Senior Nick Garza finished in 10th place.

The 60-meter race for the Cougars saw junior Tremaine Smith win third with a time of 6.84.

For the women, senior Kelli Williams finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 11.87m(38-11.50) and Easley finished fifth in the shot put.

Sophomore Dayo Ogunnyi had a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.87m(19-03.25). Easley and freshman Hyleta Young followed in third and fourth, respectively.

The Cougars will compete again Friday and Saturday at the New Mexico Invitational.
