Sports Cougars fill coaching void with former UAB assistant Cougar Sports Services Head football coach Art Briles announced Jan. 18 that George Pugh will be the new wide receivers coach for UH. Pugh comes from Alabama-Birmingham, where he spent two seasons as an assistant coach. Briles is confident that Pugh, who has more than 20 years of experience as a college football coach, has all the intangibles to help build a winning team. "George brings a lot to the table, especially experience and stability," Briles told UHCougars.com. "He knows this conference and he knows how to win, and I like that. He is an extremely versatile coach, having coached on both sides of the ball." Pugh spent his time at UAB working with running backs, tight ends, defensive ends and wide receivers. Pugh was also involved in the recruitment process. Pugh's résumé prior to joining the UAB staff includes being an assistant coach with Jackie Sherrill at Pittsburgh (1981) and at Texas A&M (1982-88). In his seven seasons coaching at Texas A&M, the team went 50-26, winning three Southwest Conference titles and making three Cotton Bowl appearances. Pugh started his coaching career in 1976 as an assistant coach at Columbia High School in Decatur, Ga. After two years of coaching, Pugh was named the head coach for Columbia, where he led the program to a 7-3 record, a district championship and regional playoffs. Pugh was a four-year starter and letter-winner at
tight end for Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant at Alabama. He earned his undergraduate
degree in health, physical education and recreation.
