Life & Arts

Look for eclectic combos this year

Music Notes

Eli Jabbe

Q-Tip, a veteran artist who has been making music for almost two decades, is working on a new album titled The Rennaisance. He emerged in the early 1990s with legendary group A Tribe Called Quest. He also had success as a solo artist with songs such as "Vivrant Thing," but he's also known for his versatility. Q-Tip has also worked with artists from all kinds of genres: Pharrell Williams, Mariah Carey (he produced her classic hit "Honey"), The Chemical Brothers, fellow Queens, N.Y., native Nas among others. Q-Tip will release the album in the spring and will have guest appearances from Common, Andre 3000 and D'Angelo, among other artists. What is interesting is that the album will feature Tipster backed by a live band.

Other coming albums will feature some interesting combinations. Bjork, the eclectic singer who hails from Iceland, is returning with an album this fall. She is working with super producer Timbaland on a couple of songs. It might be surprising to see her team with Timbo, who has crafted the majority of songs from popular albums this past year from Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado. The two have some of the most unorthodox methods when it comes to making music.

In addition, Kanye West will be teaming with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin for songs on his latest LP Graduation. The album is expected to come out late this year, and is the first album that Kanye has done in some time: His second LP, Late Registration, was released in 2005. Graduation's first single "Homecoming" will feature Martin.

Another event featuring artists from all genres will be taking place soon. The 2007 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which takes place in Indio, Calif., from April 27 to 29, will feature a reunited Rage Against The Machine. Also slated to perform: California natives Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ghostface, Fountains of Wayne of "Stacy's Mom" fame, The Roots and the aforementioned Bjork. The highlight of this event is the fact that Rage will be performing as a group for the first time since 2000.
