SGA fills open seats, mulls amendment

The Student Government Association Senate filled three vacancies and proposed an amendment to its constitution at the its first meeting of the semester Wednesday.

President Francisco Zelaya expressed excitement about the coming elections, noting incumbent senators will keep campaigns away from SGA facilities.

"Students deserve an equal opportunity. ... (SGA) isn't here for personal agendas. We are here to better inform students," Zelaya said.

Three nominees for open seats in the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and College of Technology were unanimously approved and will take office immediately.

Kayley Sanders, a hotel and restaurant management sophomore approved for the HRM senator position, spoke of the importance of communication between UH and its students.

"We are a commuter school, and that can come with a stigma. Our biggest deficit is a lack of communication between the University and students," Sanders said.

Newly approved CLASS senator and music freshman Bethany Johns encouraged change within the Moores School of Music.

"Since I've started (in the music program), I've noticed the music students aren't interested in networking. I would like to find a way to get them out of the lounge and into the process," Johns said.

Randy Womack, a computer engineering junior approved for the College of Technology seat, expressed an interest in and implementing a tutoring center within his college.

Sam Dike, CLASS senator and speaker pro tem, introduced a new bill that will serve as an amendment to the SGA Constitution. If passed, the bill will change the former SGA student regent position to director of external affairs.

"Currently, the governor appoints our Systemwide regent. By approving this amendment, (the director of external affairs) will be fighting for the same issues we have as students," Dike said.

The new officer would be appointed by the president of the SGA with the consent of the Senate, and his or her duties would include promoting UH to other schools, the community and lawmakers.
