Making Sense of Student Loans
UH emergency tuition loans
Amount: Total tuition and fees due, other than incidental
charges, like parking
Term: 90 days or end of term
Interest Rate: 5 percent per anum
Requirements: No outstanding debt to UH
UH short-term loans
Amount: All school charges
Term: 45 days or last class day
Interest Rate: 12 percent per anum
Requirements: Enrolled in minimum of six hours
Federal Perkins loan
Amount: $1,500 to $4,000 a year, as determined by
eligibility
Term: 10 years
Interest Rate: 5 percent
Requirements: "Exceptional financial need"
Federal Stafford loan
Amount: Limits vary by academic year
Term: 10 years
Interest Rate: Varies by loan provider
