Sports UH can scale C-USA ladder by JONG LEE
Rebounding, controlling the paint and staying out of foul trouble are areas UH had not been consistent in prior to its four-game homestand. The women's basketball team has bounced back recently, however. Houston (7-11, 4-4 Conference USA) dominated Southern Methodist (11-9, 3-5 C-USA) in the paint Saturday, grabbing 36 offensive rebounds, scoring 38 second-chance points and putting up 28 points in the paint. Senior forward/center Sha'Quaylon McKinney clogged the middle, recording 18 points and 16 rebounds. The Cougars relied on their inside-out game Jan. 25 against Tulsa (7-13, 2-6 C-USA). Houston went 27 for 58 from the field, shot 46 percent from three-point territory and outscored Tulsa 34-24 in the paint. Junior guard Tye Jackson finished with 24 points and recorded 12 rebounds, a career-high for her. The Cougars also knocked off Southern Methodist (11-9, 3-5 C-USA) 81-65 on Saturday to start their homestand 2-0. "I think the whole weekend, particularly (the game against SMU), just felt like we started to click -- kind of what we were hoping for playing with seven kids," head coach Joe Curl said. The Cougars will host C-USA leader Tulane (17-4, 6-2 C-USA) at 7 p.m. tonight and will look to keep the good times rolling. "They are certainly sitting in a better slot than we are at 6-2, but we have evened this thing out at 4-4 and hopefully we can take it four minutes at a time and win this game," Curl said. Curl said Houston must remain consistent if it plans
to gain on second place Texas-El Paso (17-3, 5-2 C-USA) in the conference
standings. The Miners will make their way to Hofheinz on Saturday to close
out the homestand.
