Cougars get tune-up matches

by MARK SUAREZ
The Daily Cougar

If there is one thing the Cougars value most prior to their match with No. 28 Texas A&M, it's practice.

And that's just what UH head coach John Severance got today when he picked up a match with Trinity Valley Community College at 10 a.m., followed by a 2 p.m. showdown with Tarleton State today at neutral site Lee College. The matches came as a result of Texas Southern dropping its program after committing in the offseason to play UH.

Severance said the matches will serve as a tune-up prior to Houston's 3 p.m. showdown with perennial power College Tennis Online No. 28 Texas A&M on Saturday at the Garland Tennis Center.

"It's kind of a warm-up match for Texas A&M," Severance said.

UH will use the opportunity to welcome two new additions to the roster. Transfer Lindsey Williford came from Cincinnati, while freshman Carla Salvador, who enrolled at UH this spring, will be in the mix as well.

The Cougars fell to Texas A&M 5-2 in 2005 at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts. Since that time, UH has won 21 consecutive home matches, a trend Severance hopes will translate well on the road.

"We're looking forward to going up to Texas A&M," Severance said. "We're excited for the opportunity to play such a high-quality team to see where we are, nationally speaking."
