RHA leaders set agenda for spring

Officers of the Residence Halls Association said they plan to infuse new life into the resident community through new activities, closer relationships with students and better ties with the Student Government Association and Student Governing Board at a General Assembly on Tuesday.

"I want RHA to be more than just Beauty Bowl and some dances. I want RHA to be a clearing house for inventive, dynamic programming that' s for y' all -- the residents," RHA President Micah Kenfield said in an address to the assembly, his first since taking the office after former President Joel Kissell stepped down last semester.

One of Kenfield' s first priorities will be reviewing the residence halls' smoking policies.

"It' s more an exploratory kind of thing," he said, noting that students will be updated on any changes at future General Assemblies.

Officers from the SGA and SGB, including Vice President David Rosen and Sen. Samuel Dike from SGA and SGB President Jonas Chin, also attended the meeting in a show of support for greater unity between the three groups.

"We will stand together to enhance student life on this campus," Dike said.

RHA also announced the formation of dodgeball teams for each hall to compete in the intramural leagues at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, and Jay Parks, associate director for programs at CRWC, outlined his plans to expand recreation activities across campus.

"Campus Recreation is not just that building over there," he said. "I' ve got a different vision than what' s been going on."

Specific changes Parks addressed included lighting for outdoor fields, an intramural council to set policies and organize events for the intramural leagues, and possible organizational tournaments, such as between Greek organizations or residence halls.

RHA also announced the entire executive board would attend Cougar Advocates for Texas UH System Day in Austin on Feb. 20. More information on the one-day trip to meet with state legislators, which is free to UH students, is available at www.mycougarconnection.com.

"We want to make sure the view of resident life is represented, too," Kenfield said.

The next General Assembly is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Oberholtzer East Cafeteria, though it may be postponed until the following week if the executive board experiences travel delays from CATS.
