News Alumna returns to work at the University Director of campus activities plans to hire new staff, increase fiscal awareness among employees by JOHN-MICHAEL HAINES
Campus Activities Director Marcella Leung' s journey has come full circle. Leung, who holds a degree in creative writing from UH, has returned to work at her alma mater. "It was really a stepping stone process. My interest in creative writing was in children' s books," Leung said. "I learned quickly that the field of early childhood at the time was very unregulated and underpaid." Leung was recruited into UH' s Division of Student Affairs, where she took the position of assistant area coordinator. She has been in her current position since October. "I came back because I was ready to become a director," Leung said. "I attended here so it had a special pull for me," she said. "I wanted other students to realize that they had a great opportunity here." Leung said her first full semester will see change in both staff and policy. "We are working as a staff to examine and strengthen services, procedures and practices," Leung said. "I reorganized, as needed, my members' job descriptions." One of her goals is better use of the department' s budget. "I want to make them more aware of our financial resources so they are aware of what they can use for development," she said. In addition to settling into her new position, Leung also said she is focusing on filling three vacant positions -- two advisers and an office coordinator. "This semester is going to be a time of learning for me as a director," Leung said. "There is going to be a lot of change, but not necessarily that students will see right away." She added that the department is working on a new Web site. Send comments to dcnews@mail.uh.edu |
