Sports UH to face ex-coach' s team by Ikechi Achilefu
The Cougars are set to host a pair of weekend matches against North Texas and Florida State. UH will play its first match of the weekend at 2 p.m. Friday against North Texas and will take the courts again at noon Sunday against Florida State. The Cougars (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season Sunday on the road against Texas A&M. Houston has won 21 consecutive matches at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts. "It' s great to win at home," UH head coach John Severance said. "The one thing about streaks is that they must all come to an end." An interesting sidebar to Sunday' s match with the Seminoles will be the return of former UH head tennis coach, Jennifer Hyd -- this time she' ll be coaching against UH. Hyde spent five seasons with Houston and Severance served under her as an assistant. "Jennifer and I are good friends. We don' t play, we just coach," Severance said. "Florida State is a good program, but when the match starts we just want to win, regardless of who the opponent is." The Cougars are set to begin a five-match homestand, which will include a match with LSU on Feb. 19. "It is essential that we play well and win the matches we are supposed to win," Severance said. "Our ladies are obviously comfortable at home. Hoff Courts just breed confidence." Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
