Life & Arts Grammy artists will dominate this week Music Notes Eli Jabbe The coming week will feature the aftermath of the yearly music extravaganza: The Grammy Awards. Full coverage of the results of this event will be featured next week. Grammy Award winner Norah Jones, who debuted in 2002 with her standout album Come Away With Me, returned with a new album and finds herself in a familiar position: number one. Just like her debut and sophomore effort, Feels Like Home, which cleared a million copies and beat out Kanye West's debut The College Dropout for the number one Billboard sales position in 2004, her latest LP, Not Too Late, has already sold an impressive 405,000 copies. It's pretty remarkable that Jones was able to take the No. 1 spot even though she hasn't made an album in three years. Not Too Late features a notable change from her other LPs: it's the first time Jones wrote and collaborated on all of the songs. Featuring 13 songs, Jones' latest has more of the blending of different genres that fans have been accustomed too, but it also features Jones venturing into new territory: political commentary. The combination of John Legend and newcomer Corinne Bailey Rae is probably best described as neo-soul heaven. They will be teaming up for a tour in a few months that will last for a month and take place in different areas of the country. In addition to this tour, the two will perform with John Mayer at the Grammy Awards. The Roots are one of the standout bands in music and had one of 2006's best albums, Game Theory, which is also Grammy-nominated. According to Questlove, the drummer for The Roots, the group is already working on its latest album scheduled for release in late 2007 or early 2008. The group, which is currently on tour, has recorded five songs already and will have a slightly different sound on the currently untitled album. Quest reflected on Game Theory's success and stated, "Critics say we got our mojo back and our fan base agreed. That's really all we were concerned about." For Nas' fans, his new single "Can't Forget About You," which features Chrisette Michelle on the chorus, made its video debut recently. Fans will probably enjoy the video because the nostalgic mood of the song is translated well into the visuals. Send comments to dcshobiz@mail.uh.edu |
