News UC celebrates 40 years at UH Commemorative festivities mark anniversary with events for students, faculty and staff all this week by JENNIFER EARLY
The University Center opened in 1967 during a turbulent year for the nation and University with a celebration that featured 500 ballons. The Vietnam War was under way, race riots marred Detroit and Washington, D.C. and the Student Senate was demanding lower textbook prices. There may not be 500 balloons, but tomorrow marks the building's 40th anniversary, and students, faculty and staff can join the celebration throughout the week. Keith Kowalka, director of the UC and associated facilities, said the UC was constructed to offer a variety of programs, activities, services and facilities. "Over the 40 years of service to UH, the UC has continued with this original intention, but also broadened the vision to facilitate community building for all stakeholders of the UH community," Kowalka said. Many commemorative events will be held throughout the week, and snapshots of the UC's history will be on display at various locations around the center until Friday. On Tuesday, participating locations in the center will slash prices to a 1967 level. Shasta's Cones and More and the Games Room will be among the participating venues. In 1967 a game of bowling was 40 cents, with a 10 cent shoe rental fee. The UC will hold a cake-cutting ceremony in the UC Circle at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Period music from the past 40 years will also be played for visitors around lunch time. In addition to cake and music, other food will be available at the UC Forty Fest from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the UC North Patio. Vendors will be selling jewelry, flowers, candy, buttons and other items from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday in the UC Arbor in recognition of Valentine's Day. The Cougar Idol Retro Preliminaries will give students the opportunity to showcase their musical talents. The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the UC Arbor. Entry forms are available online at www.uh.edu/ucaf. The winner of the finals, held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, will perform as the opening act at Frontier Fiesta and receive $200 worth of travel vouchers from STA Travel. Kowalka says that student organizations have been critical to the UC's continued success. "We try very hard to keep (the UC) in good condition and hip for our students," Kowalka said.
