Junior ace Shamblin picks up C-USA honor COUGAR SPORTS SERVICES The Conference USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year just picked up another award. Junior Angel Shamblin was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. It was the sixth time in Shamblin's career she has won the accolade and the second consecutive year she has won the award in the first week of the season. Shamblin compiled a 3-1 record and posted a .039 ERA last weekend at the Wilson/ DeMarini Invitational at Cougar Softball Stadium. The Florida native recorded 22 strikeouts in 18 innings of work while holding opponents to a .194 batting average. In the process, Shamblin, who is 13 strikeouts away from No. 300 for her career, set a school record by pitching a complete game, 14-strikeout performance in a 4-2 win over Ole Miss on Friday. Shamblin pitched in relief in a 2-1 win over Ole Miss and a 2-1 loss to No. 11 Michigan on Saturday. She took the mound Sunday to help the Cougars avenge that loss in a 2-1 win over the Wolverines. Shamblin came into the game in the fourth inning with one out and UH ahead 2-1. Michigan was threatening with runners on the corners but Shamblin recorded the next two outs to protect the Cougar lead. The Cougars play next against Texas State at 6 p.m.
Thursday at Cougar Field.
