News Group helps decode taxes Volunteers provide tax-prep assistance to UH's international students by ROLANDO DANS
Preparing taxes can be a daunting task for anyone, but the University's international students can get a helping hand from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Free tax preparation assistance will be provided in conjunction with the Houston Certified Public Accountant Society from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Feb. 17 in the Bayou City Room of the University Center. "The Houston CPA Society has sponsored and staffed the site at University of Houston since 1998," said Paula Ruth, public relations counselor for the Houston CPA Society. In 2006, VITA program volunteers at the site completed 275 returns for the 2005 tax year. The UH site is the only one in Houston that caters exclusively to international students, Ruth said. The complexity of U.S. tax laws makes the free service invaluable to nonresidents living at the University. VITA assistance will also be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 24; March 17, 24 and 31; and April 14 in the same location. Students are encouraged to bring their W-2s, 1099s, 1042s, any records of income and expenses and their visa or passport. Students interested in volunteering should contact Judith Butcher at (713) 622-7733. "Generally, accounting students and members of the Student Auxiliary to the Houston CPA Society will be among the volunteers, but one doesn't need to be an accounting major," Ruth said, adding that it is helpful for students to have some experience working with tax returns. Students who would like more information can contact
the International Student and Scholar Services Office at (713) 743-5065.
