music
For famed composer, collaborations
of different genres
COUGAR LIFE & ARTS SERVICES In the world of countless movie soundtracks, there are very few names on the back of the album that stick out to the listener. For Philip Glass, though, his named is attached to the fame of being the most popular classical-music composer working today. And for the composer's 70th birthday, Glass will visit Houston for two things: a multimedia event presented by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts today, and a concert by the Philip Glass Ensemble on Friday. The Center for the Arts will host "Creativity and Collaboration: An Evening with Philip Glass" today where Glass will speak about how the collaborations of different genres of music can influence an artist and push music and art into new territory. The event will include film clips, a discussion with the audience and piano examples of his works. Once an odd-bird of the music world, Glass is now a major influence on some of the music business powerhouse acts. Glass has influenced numerous acts including Talking Heads, Coldplay and Phish; and has participated in collaborations with Paul Simon, Natalie Merchant, Aphex Twin and rock star David Bowie, among others. Not to mention, Glass has worked with artists who are not in the music genre like poet Allen Ginsberg and playwright Robert Wilson, to name a few. While working with mainstream music acts, Glass has stuck to his roots -- composing music. Glass is an Academy Award-nominated musician and has a large breadth when it comes to the works he has produced. Symphonies, minimalist arrangements, operas and composing the scores for such films as The Hours, Notes on a Scandal, The Illusionist, Candyman and its sequal are all under Glass's résumé.
