Lost Cougars can't find first win on road

The Cougars' effort to overcome an 18-point second half deficit came up short against Southern Methodist Saturday night.

UH cut SMU's lead to 48-41 with 4:58 remaining in regulation on the strength of a 26-15 run, but fell 61-50 en route to its sixth consecutive loss.

SMU dominated boards, bringing down 47 rebounds to Houston's 39, and also outscored the Cougars 32-14 in the paint.

For the game, UH (7-17, 4-10 C-USA) shot a dismal 30 percent (18-60) from the floor and had 19 turnovers. The turnovers hampered the Cougars comeback, which SMU translated into 25 points.

UH's leading scorer, junior guard Tye "Triple Threat" Jackson, tallied 18 points while matching a season high of five three pointers. Freshman Ashlee Joseph chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds while junior Alona Obaze overcame the stomach flu to score nine points in 39 minutes.

The Cougars Conference-USA road season will end (0-13) without a win, this is the second time in UH women's basketball history. The last time a team was winless on the road occurred during the 1998-1999 season, when the Cougars finished 0-12.

UH will finish out the season by taking on Memphis at 7 p.m., Feb. 22 and Alabama-Birmingham at 2 p.m., Feb. 24 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
