Sports UH takes fourth at Conference USA Championship meet by JONG LEE
The utter dominance of Southern Methodist was displayed at the Conference-USA Swimming and Diving Championships. SMU finished with 853 points, almost 200 points ahead of Rice (653.5) who took home second. East Carolina came in third, with 586 points and Houston finished in fourth place with 577 points. "Any time you finish below your expectations it's a little sad, but all of the athletes we have on our team right now swam great (in the conference championships). They had some better times than they did this season," head swimming coach Mark Taylor said. "There were inspirational swims, school records broken, NCAA qualifying times made and I don't have any complaints about the athletes we have here. Throughout most of the final day, the Cougars were in third place, and in reach of Rice for second. Senior Rachel Gitelson scored 293.45 points to win the women's platform championship, junior Ginni van Katwijk came in second with 264.05 points and sophomore Anastasia Pozdniakova completed the sweep of the platforms with 240.65 points. "Today was really just kind of a cap-off on a great week, so we're very excited getting ready for the NCAA qualifying meet. It puts us in a good position to try to qualify all three divers," head diving coach Jane Figueiredo said. Senior Szintia Szanto finished her career as a Cougar
with a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with 2:16.39. Sophomore
Andrea Pa'lmai broke a Cougar record of almost 22 years and placed second
in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.52.
