Sports Tigers pounce on Cougars in 7-0 loss at Hoff Courts COUGAR SPORTS SERVICES The Cougars dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 47 LSU on Monday at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts but found a silver lining in the loss. On paper UH was clearly overmatched by a young Tiger squad, but UH head coach John Severance felt his team learned a thing or two from the experience of playing a College Tennis Online top 50 team. "Despite falling behind early in all of our matches, our team fought hard to the end," Severance told UHCougars.com. "I was proud of the way we played (each match) to the end. This is a valuable learning experience that will pay dividends later this season." Houston dropped the doubles point to open the match for only the second time this season. The tandem of Lindsay Willeford and junior Leila Salek fell 8-4 on the No. 3 court, which was Houston's closest margin of defeat. In singles action, Salek came back from a 4-2 second set deficit to tie the score at 4-4, but dropped the next two games en route to a 6-0, 6-4 loss to No. 83 Mykala Hedberg. Sophomore Vicki Simpson was the only Cougar to push her opponent to a third set limit. Simpson was down 4-2 in the final frame before winning two of the next three games to make things close at 5-4. Her efforts would fall short, however, as she fell 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 to Tiffany Tucker. The Cougars will be back in action at the Hoff Courts to close out their five-match homestand against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at noon Thursday. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
